I grew up with the Philadelphia Flyers. They won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975. They were called the Broad Street Bullies because they completely dominated every other team physically. The rest of the league hated their style of play and the front office publicly denounced them. You could almost see the NHL executives holding their noses as the cup was awarded to them. Philadelphia, however, welcomed this style of play. The gritty blue collar town embraced a team full of heart and grit themselves. The team represented the city like no other sports franchise ever could.
In 1976 the Soviet Army hockey team came to America and beat every NHL team they faced…until they met the Flyers. The second clip highlights my favorite hockey player of all time…Ron Hextall. He was the first goalie in the NHL to score a goal.
