When I first heard the Counting Crows I felt they would be huge (they had limited success, so I’d better calibrate my crystal ball). The music was fresh for the time and had a nice rambling vibe to the songs. The lyrics were especially unusual and enlightening. Coincidentally, I married my wife, Maria, about the time their first album was released.
We too noticed the constant references to Maria in their songs and pretended they were written about her. They should have been.
Maria is a recurring character in the songs written by Adam Duritz, the songwriter and lead singer of Counting Crows. Maria has appeared in the lyrics of four Counting Crows songs and in two other songs written by Duritz, and has fueled speculation and debate among fans. Duritz contends that she is fictional, along with humans in general.
