If ever there was an underground music act Godspeed is it. The band is shrouded in mystery and secrecy. They’ve been called anarchists and terrorists, and they eschew the materialism of the commercial music world. I saw this band at a small club in Philadelphia. The show started when the lights dimmed and a 10 minute bass drone was played before the band took their seats. They played for a couple of hours and left the stage. It was eerie and artistically genius.
The members are relatively unknown, but come from Montreal, Canada. There is no spokesman or lead. But there are a gaggle of musicians playing everything from glockenspiels to classical instruments, to traditional guitars using screwdrivers for effect. They are known as the epitome of post-rock outfits.
The first video has some really beautiful landscapes set to Godspeed music. The second track is a High School band (about 30 musicians) tackling the song, Gathering Storm. It really demonstrates the depth of textures in this music and an amount of discipline not seen in pop music.
