Alligator was released in 2005 to critical acclaim. It was a transitional album between the pop ballads produced prior to the darker, more inspired tracks in follow up LPs. One thing that always stands out on a National record is the lyrics. They are brooding and complicated and constructed in a way that is original and poetic. Some of those words shouldn’t go together, but it works. Here is my favorite track from the album, Secret Meeting.
