Peter Gabriel has always been one of my favorite artists. In fact, probably my favorite artist. He was avant garde, he was ahead of his time, he was inspiring. He took advantage of any new technology that came along and produced some award winning videos because of it. In 1986 he released the album So. It was an acclaimed success and, thanks to producer Daniel Lanois, was the album that established his bass heavy “world beat” sound. Phil Collins said at the time, “The world has finally caught up to Peter Gabriel.” His participation in 1986 Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope Tour was a highlight. He ended his set with Biko and I remember the crowd continuing the final chant long after he left the stage. I thought, what admiration that has to be, what love.
Here are two tracks. One is that iconic Biko performance and the other is the bass heavy Growing Up from the Up album.
