A Ghost is Born is Wilco’s 5th studio album, following the breakout, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and featured a much more marked guitar and indie sound than the Country Rock beginnings of the band. Lead singer and guitarist Jeff Tweedy describes some of his guitar solos as “musical panic attacks” and entered rehab after recording the record. Because of the prominence of lead guitar on A Ghost is Born, Tweedy had to hone his guitar skills to fill in for dismissed lead guitarist Jay Bennett. The album retains the experimental influences first introduced on Foxtrot and seems a less polished rock record.

That don’t know nothing
About my soul
Oh they don’t know

“Miles From Our Home”

No one in sight for fifty miles,
sleeping fields sigh as I glide across their spines
If I could just reach the crest of that hill
this whole day will tumble and out the night will spill

The sky is still as a spinning top,
shooting stars drop like burning words from above
If I could just connect all these dots,
the truth would tumble like a cynic vexed by love

And yet the people keep saying
I’m miles from my home,
miles from my home

I met you again in my sleep last night,
these are days of slow boats and false starts
Hearts remain under lock and key,
you will be the one to set them both free

And yet the people will tell you
your miles from your home,
miles from your home

But that’s where I want to be
Out there searching,
out here fumbling,
out here waiting,
for you and you for me

The moon hangs like a question mark,
pale as milk, bold as a promise
When will you share the sights with us?
when will we hold you in our arms?

And the people we’ll tell them
we’re miles from our home,
miles from our home

The Airborne Toxic Event

The Airborne Toxic Event is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Both celebrated and panned by critics, the band is a listener favorite. The mix of strings with rock music is used create a hybrid sound with classic rock riffs.

While the first album was heralded as a fresh new sound (the Boston Herald dubbed it Debut Album of the Year), Pitchfork Media referred to the band as imitating the worst in other Indie acts.

I find their music enjoyable and easy to like. Although a familiar sound, the orchestral effects, and bright lyrics bring a degree of uniqueness to the band.

17897_456693384394616_1951778613_nSemblance is a Post-Rock, Instrumental band out of Oklahoma City. The Quotes EP is the only release so far, but it is a sophisticated and eclectic effort ranking right along with more experienced bands like Explosions in the Sky or Maserati. I expect (and hope) for more releases from this talented five piece. You can pick up the EP using this “Name Your Price” link.

Le Loup (The Wolf)

Le_LoupLe Loup was an Alternative/Indie band active from 2006 to 2011. The made two records, “Family” and “The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly.” Their sound is original and inspiring. It was a band that started out as a home music pastime of Sam Simkoff and gradually acquired members to perform the tracks live. Sadly, the band broke up, but left us with some beautifully textured music.

They are often compared to bands like Surfjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, and Animal Collective. We’ll post some of that music going forward. Their only commercial success was a Blackberry commercial featuring “Morning Song” from the “Family” album.

Would you do it?

If you could blow up the world with the flick of a switch
Would you do it?
If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich
Would you do it?
If you could watch everybody work while you just lay on your back
Would you do it?
If you could take all the love without giving any back
Would you do it?
And so we cannot know ourselves or what we’d really do…

If you could make your own money and then give it to everybody
Would you do it?
If you knew all the answers and could give it to the masses
Would you do it?

Pure Imagination

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it

This is a short film by Chipotle that speaks about corporate agriculture. I read once that our farming practices are the most inefficient they could possibly be. However, we probably need to strike a balance between efficiency, healthful practices, and cruelty.

Fiona Apple sounds wonderful in this remake of an old Willie Wonka film song.
