This melody was written around 1400 B.C.E. The 3400 year old piece was discovered on unearthed Sumerian cuneiform tablets in the early 1950’s and was intended to be played on an ancient lyre. The interpretation below, while most definitely not a representation of the ancient original, is a piano arrangement that’s much easier to listen to than an ancient lyre. While the clay tablet does identify the notes, there is no indication of rhythm, so the speed and tempo is interpreted by the artist. For more on this fascinating discovery click here.
