Words Mean Things

Are you offended when someone suggests the words “one nation, under god” be removed from the pledge of allegiance? Good. Now you know how those who disagree feel. However, you’d still be more wrong than they are. You aren’t pledging to the United States of America when reciting that pledge. The United States isn’t a nation under god and the 1st amendment to the constitution says so. Revisionist christians will say the nation was founded on christian principles, but they would be wrong. The founding fathers left little doubt that church and state should be “walled” apart and, in fact, the only time our Constitution mentions god is when referring to the dating method of the day (year of our lord). Besides, why would a god be so shallow that he needs a particular nation, including non-believers, to be coerced into praising him. Making school kids participate in ones religion is abhorrent and evil.

In the past I stood and recited the pledge, omitting the “under god” part. However, I’ve been thinking about it and realize now that “Words Mean Things” and reciting that pledge is not pledging allegiance to the United States, even if I omit the offending words. I’ll no longer be reciting that pledge, and until it is changed back to it’s original version, without “under god” in it, I’ll not be standing up for it either.

“The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”
~John Adams 1797
