Not much is known of Saint Valentine except his name and that he died on February 14th on the Via Flaminia, which was an ancient road that traversed much of the Roman Empire. The road was built in 220 BC and was witness to some of the world’s most significant historic events, taken by Julius Caesar during the Roman Civil War, accommodating barbarian hordes during it’s fall, and helping to liberate the Italian peninsula in World War II. All of this is much more interesting than the holiday made up by Christians to compete with the pagan holiday of Lupercalia. However, we embraced this as a day to celebrate lovers and that’s what we do. It’s whimsical and childish, and if it makes someone happy it’s the most important thing in the world.
